Common Name(s): Hydrogenated milk lipids, hydrogenated milk lipids, hydrogenated oil/wax,oxidatively stable emollient

CAS Number: N/a

DESCRIPTION

What It Does: Provides emollient conditioning with superior oxidative shelf stability from fully saturated carbon chains — eliminating the rancidity risk of the precursor unsaturated oil for long shelf-life anhydrous and colour cosmetic applications.

Why It's Used: Hydrogenation converts labile c=c double bonds to c-c single bonds — each eliminated double bond removes an oxidation initiation site, with full saturation providing indefinite oxidative stability unavailable from natural unsaturated oils.

How It Works: Catalytic hydrogenation (h₂/pd or ni catalyst): c=c → c-c; the added h atoms eliminate the bis-allylic ch₂ groups that are the primary lipid oxidation initiation sites. tm elevation: each c-c replacing c=c raises tm ~10-20°c — partial hydrogenation produces solid wax emollients; full hydrogenation produces hard waxes with tm 60-80°c.

Typically Found In: Anhydrous cosmetics, colour cosmetics, long shelf life

Works Well With: Humectants, ceramides, actives as carrier

Avoid Combining With: No significant incompatibilities

SCIENTIFIC NOTE

Trans fatty acid monitoring: partial hydrogenation can generate trans isomers — cosmetic applications require coa confirming cis/trans ratio particularly for ingredients intended for near-oral products (lip products).
