HYDROXYETHYL CETYLDIMONIUM CHLORIDE
Description
Hydroxyethyl cetyldimonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound widely used in personal care and cosmetic formulations. This cationic surfactant functions primarily as a conditioning agent and antistatic additive in hair and skin products. Its molecular structure consists of a long hydrophobic carbon chain and a positively charged hydrophilic head, allowing it to effectively bind to negatively charged surfaces like hair and skin.
In hair care applications, hydroxyethyl cetyldimonium chloride helps reduce static electricity, improve combability, and enhance overall manageability of hair strands. For skincare products, it acts as an emollient, providing a smooth and soft feel to the skin's surface. This ingredient also exhibits mild antimicrobial properties, contributing to product preservation.
Typically used at concentrations between 0.1% to 5%, hydroxyethyl cetyldimonium chloride is compatible with a wide range of cosmetic ingredients. It remains stable across various pH levels and is effective in both leave-on and rinse-off formulations. While generally well-tolerated, individuals with sensitive skin should perform patch tests before regular use of products containing this ingredient. As with many quaternary ammonium compounds, it biodegrades relatively slowly and may have some environmental implications if released in large quantities.
